Design of the 2008 American Silver Eagle
These 2008 American Silver Eagles (ASE) feature the classic design, Walking Liberty, that was created by Adolph Weinman in 1916. At the base of the obverse is the year of mintage, "2008," inscribed horizontally just below the goddess Liberty's foot. Liberty's image takes up nearly the full diameter of the coin. She is striding toward the left, stretching her right arm out with her palm open and elbow bent. She holds olive branches, globally recognized symbols of peace, in her left hand. The branches extend upward past her shoulder. Just in front of her leg on the coin is the sun, the rays of which emanate behind Liberty. To the right, America's national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed behind her leg. The goddess's name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed along the rim of the coin, running slightly more than hallway down on either side.
The reverse of the coin features a design created by John Mercanti in 1986. An eagle spreads its wings upward with its body covered by a shield, which is intended to represent the country. In its beak, the eagle holds a ribbon that bears the motto that can also be seen on the Great Seal of the United States, "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The eagle's talons hold symbolic objects. In one are arrows, which are indicative of the country's willingness to fight when its values are threatened. In the other is an olive branch, which indicates a preference for peace. In the negative space between the eagle's wings and over its head are thirteen stars, symbols of the original thirteen colonies. Information about the coin is inscribed along the rim of the coin. Arching over the image of the eagle are the words, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." Along the bottom half of the rim is information about the weight of the coin, as well as its face value. That inscription reads, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR."
