Why purchase this 2007-W $5 Gold Proof commemorating the founding of Jamestown?

Jamestown, Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the New World. Named in honor of James I of England, the town was officially founded on May 14, 1607, its population of settlers being the voyagers aboard the three London Company ships arriving a few weeks earlier. In celebration of the 400th Anniversary of the settlement, the U.S. Mint issued this $5 face value Jamestown Commemorative Proof in 2007, struck by the West Point Mint from 0.242 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold. Final mintage is reported to be 47,123.

Magnificent Commemorative Design

Designed by John Mercanti, the coin's obverse features the standing figures of Captain John Smith and the Native American chief Powhatan, with a sailing ship in the background, "IN GOD WE TRUST" above. The image border contains the inscriptions "FOUNDING OF JAMESTOWN" and "LIBERTY" along with the anniversary dates of "1607" and "2007."

The reverse depicts the facade of the only remaining structure of the original settlement, the Jamestown Memorial Church, with its name inscribed below. The design by Susan Gamble includes the additional inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "$5."
