Why buy this 2-Coin 10th Anniversary 2007-W $50 Platinum Reverse Proof and Proof Set?
The US Mint celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Platinum Eagle in 2007 with a two-coin Proof and Reverse Proof Set. That was the first time that the mint struck a Reverse Proof Platinum Eagle. Both coins were part of the second of three issues in a series within a series honoring the three branches of government. 19,583 of these sets were sold. Each coin was struck from 1/2 oz of .9995 fine platinum.
Stunning Executive Branch Design by Thomas Cleveland
The obverse bears a design by John Mercanti that is common to all Platinum Eagles. A closeup look at the face of the Statue of Liberty, it features the iconic figure staring directly into the eyes of the holder. The seven rays of her crown, which represent the spread of freedom throughout the seven seas and the seven continents, are interspersed with the figure's name, "LIBERTY," at the top of this face. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is inscribed on her shoulder, with the date, "2007," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," are inscribed on the right.
Thomas Cleveland designed the reverse, which honors the executive branch. An eagle spreads its wings as it guards a union shield. A ribbon with the word "FREEDOM" is draped over the shield. The image is encircled by a rim frame in which there are four sets of inscriptions. The name of the issuing country, "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," spreads throughout the top half of the rim. Other rim inscriptions note the coin's weight, "1/2 OZ.," its purity, ".9995 PLATINUM," and its face value, "$50."
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded both of these pieces their highest grade, Proof 70. That grade is only given to coins that appear perfect even under 5x magnification.
