Obverse: On the obverse is a portrait of President Thomas Jefferson by Jamie Franki. "LIBERTY," as hand written by Jefferson, is inscribed to the right along with the date, "2005." The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed along the rim. Jamie Franki is an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Reverse: On the reverse is Monticello, as rendered by Felix Schlag. Below the building are inscriptions of its name, "MONTICELLO," and the coin's face value, "FIVE CENTS." The statutory motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," are inscribed along the rim. Felix Schlag was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States. He is most famous for designing the Jefferson Nickel.
