Why purchase this Commemorative- 2006-S San Francisco Old Mint Silver Dollar Proof?
The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake devastated the city. Over 3,000 people were killed, and many buildings were destroyed. The San Francisco Mint survived, and in 2006 this Silver Dollar Proof was struck to commemorate the anniversary of its survival. Perfect for collectors who are interested in America's numismatic history, this coin was struck from 26.73 g of .900 fine silver. It bears the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco Mint and is part of a mintage of 160,870 pieces.
Exquisite San Francisco Mint Design by
Sherl J. Winter designed the obverse. The image features the Old San Francisco Mint as seen from the left corner of the building. Beneath the building are the inscriptions "OLD MINT" and "THE GRANITE LADY." "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is inscribed to the upper left, and the anniversary dates, "1906-2006," are included in the upper right. Rim inscriptions read "LIBERTY" and "INSTRUMENTAL IN SAN FRANCISCO'S RECOVERY."
Joseph Menna copied the Morgan Silver Dollar design of George T. Morgan for the reverse. An open wreath partially encircles an eagle, which clutches arrows and an olive branch. The arrows indicate that America is prepared to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates a desire for peace. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above the bird's head. Rim inscriptions note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
