Why add this 2006 Belgian 10 Euro Silver Proof commemorating Justus Lipsius to your collection?
2006 marked the 400th Anniversary of the death of Belgian philosopher Justus Lipsius, whose teachings led to the philosophical movement known today as "Neostoicism." This beautifully designed 33 mm diameter proof celebrating the milestone was struck at the Royal Belgian Mint from 0.60 Troy oz. of .925 fine silver with a reported mintage of 50,000. The commemorative Silver Proof is part of the 2006 Europa coin program honoring famous European personalities. Design of the coin is credited to Royal Belgian Mint designer Luc Luycx, who also designed the common reverse to the Euro coins.
Impressively detailed Commemorative design
The obverse features a portrait of Lipsius, beside a scrolled vine and the inscription "JUSTUS LIPSIUS" and the dates "1547-1606."
The reverse depicts the shape of the European continent surrounded by the twelve stars of the European Union. Inscriptions include "BELGIUM" in Dutch, French, and German, the three official languages of the country, as well as "10 EURO 2006."
Nearly Perfect Ultra Cameo Proof 69
The Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), graded this beautiful 2006 Belgium 10 Euro Justus Lipsius 400th Anniversary of Death Silver Proof a virtually flawless Proof 69. For the exceptional highly polished mirrored surfaces, which contrast beautifully with the delicately frosted designs, this proof also received the designation Ultra Cameo, on its NGC certification label.
