Stunning Buffalo Design
Obverse: The obverse design is based on a sculpture of Thomas Jefferson by Jean-Antoine Houdon, a French sculptor. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed as Jefferson wrote it to the right. Rim inscriptions provide the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2005."
Reverse: On the reverse are images of a buffalo, which Lewis and Clark encountered, and the Pacific Ocean as it was when discovered by Captain William Clark's expedition. The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the statutory motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the coin's face value, "FIVE CENTS," are inscribed on the reverse of both coins. The one from William Clark's expedition also bears the inscription "OCEAN IN VIEW! OH THE JOY!"
