Design of the 2005 Proof Silver Eagle
The obverse of this proof Silver Eagle coin features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design which first appeared on U. S. coinage in 1916. The design features a female figure representing Liberty walking confidently forward. Her right hand is open, as if in invitation, and her left hand holds an olive branch bouquet as a symbol of peace. The sun is in the background with sunbeams projecting from it. Inscriptions are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2005.”
The Silver Eagle’s reverse depicts John M. Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design which first appeared on U. S. coinage in 1986. The design sports a majestic heraldic eagle holding arrows and an olive branch in each claw, with 13 stars above the eagle, each symbolizing one of the original 13 colonies. The inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "1 OZ. FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR" appears along the rim. The national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" appears on a banner held in the eagle's beak. Many numismatists hold this coin to be one of the most beautiful coin designs in U. S. history. Since silver is a soft metal, it produces relatively little wear and tear on the striking dies, therefore, more details can be imprinted onto each coin.
Silver Eagle Coins
Since their debut in 1986, the American Silver Eagles have become one of the most popular of U.S. Coins, even rivaling such classics as the Morgan Silver Dollar and the Lincoln Cent for the title of Top U.S. Coin.
This 2005 Silver Eagle coin is graded and certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) and is rated as Proof 69. NGC uses a 1-70 scale to grade coins with 70 being the highest grade achievable. The strike type of this coin is proof. A proof coin is one that is made using specially treated dies and struck numerous times to achieve a frosted look on the raised parts of the design, with a mirror-like finish on the background. By striking it more than once the metal is forced into every crevice of the die which gives a very fine detail to the image on the coin. This coin has an Ultra Cameo finish indicating there is a high degree of contrast between the frosted devices and the mirrored fields.
