Why purchase this 2005-P John Marshall silver dollar graded MS70 by NGC?
John Marshall was the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, a position he held from 1801 to 1835. He is best known for establishing the principle of judicial review, which holds that the Supreme Court has the power to overturn an Act of Congress if it goes beyond the powers that are granted by the Constitution.
The obverse of this coin was designed by John Mercanti, who was Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint at the time the coin was issued. It is based on an 1808 painting by Charles-Balthazar-Julien Fevret de Saint-Memin. The reverse shows the old Supreme Court Chamber.
196,753 proof coins were sold, and 67,096 uncirculated examples were sold. Both were minted in Philadelphia. The proof coin was also sold as part of a coin and chronicles set. NGC has graded 3,238 of these coins, and 70% of them are graded proof 70. Considering that only 30% of the NGC-graded examples are proof 70 coins, this coin is a good value at its current price. It would make a fine addition to any commemorative coin set, including a registry set.
