Why buy this Proof 70 Ultra Cameo 2004-S Handshake Nickel

This 2004-S Proof Handshake Nickel is a great choice for students of American history. The coin was issued to commemorate two centuries since the young country's expansion to include the Louisiana Territory. Struck from copper-nickel at the San Francisco Mint, this coin has an "S" Mint mark, which appears in the lower right of the obverse.

Powerful Indian Peace Medal design by Thomas Jefferson

Felix Schlag designed the obverse image, which is a left-side profile of America's third President, Thomas Jefferson. He created the image using a bust that was made by Jean-Antoine Houdon.

On the reverse is a rendition of the original Indian Peace Medal, which was designed by Thomas Jefferson himself. Lewis and Clark used the medal during their famous expedition. At the top, a calumet and a tomahawk cross each other. Below are two clasped hands, one of an American soldier and the other of a Native American. The latter wears a band that has an American eagle. Inscriptions on this face include "LOUISIANA PURCHASE" and the date of the purchase, "1803."

Perfect Proof 70 Ultra Cameo

This coin is in perfect condition as seen under 5x magnification, so it earned the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's (NGC) highest grade, Proof 70. Its stark contrasts between deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices also earned it Ultra Cameo certification.
