She bears branches of laurel and oak, which are symbols of civilian and military honors. To the lower left, the sun is setting in the distance on the horizon. The word “LIBERTY” spans the top half of the rim of the coin, partially obscured by the main image. On the right is the national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” while the mintage year, “2003,” is inscribed at the bottom.
John Mercanti’s adaptation of the eagle guarding a shield from the Great Seal of the United States dominates the reverse. The eagle’s wings span upward, providing the backdrop for the ribbon the bird holds in its beak, which reads, “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Thirteen stars are arranged over the eagle’s head, and it bears important symbols, an olive branch and arrows, in its talons. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” runs along the top half of the rim, while another inscription, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR,” appears at the bottom.
