The Silver Eagle
The Silver American Eagle has been the most popular silver coin in the United States since 1986 when the first silver eagle was released. In 2003 specifically, the demand for business strike American Silver Eagles was on the decline, suffering a decline of about two million coins in comparison to the previous year; however, what remained steady was the demand of the highly collectible proof versions.
The American Silver Eagle bears what many consider one of the most popular designs in American Coinage. The design on the obverse of this coin features Adolph. A. Weinman’s design of Lady Liberty who is draped in an American flag, walking gracefully as the sun rises over a ridge and its rays begin to fill the sky. On the reverse of this coin you will find a design constructed by none other than John Mercanti. This design depicts thirteen small stars in the shape of an upside down triangle; one for each of the original colonies. At the tip of the triangle you will find a heraldic eagle in front of a shield. On the reverse of the coin you will also see an inscription of a small, “W”, which represents that this coin was minted at the West Point Mint.
