The Silver Eagle

The Silver American Eagle has been the most popular silver coin in the United States since 1986 when the first silver eagle was released. In 2003 specifically, the demand for business strike American Silver Eagles was on the decline, suffering a decline of about two million coins in comparison to the previous year; however, what remained steady was the demand of the highly collectible proof versions.

The American Silver Eagle bears what many consider one of the most popular designs in American Coinage. This 2003 American Silver Eagle was struck using a special, high quality minting process allowing for an extremely impressive proof finish to accompany the classic American Silver Eagle design. With that said, this coin has also been certified as a deep cameo (DCAM) by the Professional Coin Grading Service, PCGS, due to this coins deeply frosted devises and lettering that contrasts beautifully with the fields on the coin. Both of these characteristics make for a mirror like proof finish that adds to this already stunning, much sought 2003 Proof American Eagle.

The design on the obverse of this coin features Adolph. A. Weinman’s design of Lady Liberty who is draped in an American flag, walking gracefully as the sun rises over a ridge and its rays begin to fill the sky. On the reverse of this coin you will find a design constructed by none other than John Mercanti. This design depicts thirteen small stars in the shape of an upside down triangle; one for each of the original colonies. At the tip of the triangle you will find a heraldic eagle in front of a shield. On the reverse of the coin you will also see an inscription of a small, “W”, which represents that this coin was minted at the West Point Mint.
