Why add the Proof 69 Ultra Cameo 2003-W $10 Platinum Eagle to your collection?
This 2003-W $10 Platinum Eagle was graded Proof 69 Ultra Cameo by industry leaders Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). It has a low mintage of 9,534 coins.
The US Mint introduced the only platinum bullion coin they strike in 1997. The Platinum Eagle series has been a classic since the public first saw it. Each coin is struck on a .9995 pure silver planchet. This example contains 1/10 oz. of platinum and is legal tender for $10.
The obverse of the coin was designed by John M. Mercanti. He is responsible for hundreds of coin and medal designs produced by the US Mint. The image that dominates the obverse is called "Liberty Looking to the Future" and shows the face of the Statue of Liberty as she looks directly forward. The reverse of the proof coins of the series are struck annually with new designs. The image on the reverse of this coin is unique in American coinage in that it features a bald eagle and the American flag. This is the first appearance of the two together on a coin. It was designed by Al Maletsky.
Proof coins are struck for collectors using a specialized planchet and polished dies. The Proof 69 grade is sought out by collectors who insist on bright, lustrous, original surfaces with superior eye appeal.
