2003-P Wright Brothers First Flight Commemorative Silver Dollar NGC MS70

This NGC certified Mint State 70 First Flight commemorative coin was issued in 2003 to honor the centennial of the first successful flight. This groundbreaking achievement by the Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, took place on December 17, 1903.

The Wright brothers achieved the first successful flight after years of experimentation with gliders. The two brothers from Dayton, Ohio, were successful after combining their knowledge pertaining to controlled flight with a motor of sufficient power and weight. The end result was a flight machine that covered a distance of 120 feet in 12 seconds – the first flight in recorded history that didn’t end up in failure.

The obverse of this 2003-P NGC MS70 Silver Dollar First Flight Wright Brothers S$1 MS70 features busts of the Wright brothers by T. James Ferrell. The reverse of this commemorative coin features the Wright Flyer flying over a sand dune at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The reverse was designed by Norman E. Nemeth.
