The Chinese Silver Panda Series has enamored collectors since its inception in 1983. It wasn't until 1988 that a 1 oz bullion version was struck. Today, this is one of the world's most collected bullion coins, and it is the only one issued in imperial units. 2003 was a unique year for the series in that there were two version of the coin struck. On this one, the bamboo is frosted, while on the other it is mirrored. This coin was struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver and is part of a mintage of half a million pieces, which also included the mirrored bamboo version.
Stunning Adult Panda Design
The obverse features the Temple of Heaven's Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. The structure, which is an example of traditional Chinese architecture, consists of concentric circular tiers. Stairs lead down from the platform on which the building stands toward the holder. The Hall is encircled by a rim frame in which there are two inscriptions, "People's Republic of China," which is in Chinese characters at the top, and the date, "2003," which is at the bottom.
On the reverse, an adult panda crawls through a bamboo field on all fours. He faces the holder, offering a detailed look at his face. Thick bamboo shoots rise behind him. The coin's face value is noted to the right, while its weight and purity, "1 OZ AG .999," are inscribed along the rim above.
Nearly Perfect MS69 with Panda Label
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided the grading information for this coin on a label that features an image of a panda. The grading company certified that the coin is in Mint State 69 condition, meaning that it appears flawless to the naked eye.
