Patriotic Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman
Obverse: Adolph Weinman's famous Walking Liberty design, which first appeared on the half dollar, features on the obverse. Draped in the American flag, Liberty wears a Phrygian cap that identifies her as a freed slave. She carries laurel and oak branches, symbols of civilian and military honors, respectively, in her left arm while extending her right arm ahead of her. Her name, "LIBERTY," is inscribed on the obverse, as are the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2002." Adolph Weinman was a German-born American sculptor. In addition to designing coins, such as the Mercury dime and Walking Liberty half dollar, he also created famous sculptures, including one on the Jefferson Memorial's pediment,
Reverse: An eagle protects a union shield on the reverse. Above its head are thirteen stars, symbols of the original states. The eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, symbols of America's willingness to defend its values and peace, in its claws. Rim inscriptions note the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," weight, "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti has designed more coins and medals than any other employee of the US Mint. He also served as the mint's eleventh Chief Engraver.
