The 2002-W American Silver Eagle Design
This 2002-W American silver eagle bears on it what is said to be one of the most famed designs to ever be struck onto an American coin! This design is found on the obverse of the coin and was designed by the prosperous Adolph A. Weinman, an American sculptor. The design depicts Lady Liberty who is wrapped in an American flag, walking gracefully as the sun rises over a ridge and its rays begin to fill the sky. On the reverse of this coin is a design configured by John Mercanti. This design depicts thirteen small stars in the shape of a triangle that is faced downward. Each small star represents one of the original colonies, and at the tip of the triangle shape that they form you will find an image of a heraldic eagle. On the reverse of the coin you will also see an inscription of a small, “W”, which represents that this coin was minted at the West Point Mint.
This 2002 Silver Eagle was struck using a specialized, high quality minting process that creates a profoundly impressive proof finish to accompany the classic American Silver Eagle design. With that said, this coin has also been denoted as a deep cameo (DCAM) by the Professional Coin Grading Service, PCGS, due to the coins deeply frosted devices and lettering that contrasts beautifully with the fields on the coin. Both of these characteristics make for a mirror like proof finish that adds to the already stunning, much adored 2002 Proof American Eagle coin.
