The 2002 Mint State 69 American Silver Eagle

Among the most popular silver coins in the world, the American Silver Eagle has a long and rich tradition that stretches back even before the first coins of the series were minted. That commitment to U.S. heritage and the coin’s undisputed value makes the 2002 $1 American Silver Eagle a coin of distinction for any silver collection.

Though initial conversations began in the mid-70s to create a silver bullion program to put the U.S. on par with the other international producers of bullion, it wasn’t until 1986 that the first Silver American Eagle was minted. Since then, however, international interest has skyrocketed, making the beloved coin arguably as recognizable today as the Canadian Maple Leaf and South African Krugerrand.

By 2002, all American Silver Eagle coins were minted at the West Point Mint, in New York State. Just over 11 million coins were produced in the program in 2002, but, importantly, the price of the coins is tied to prevailing silver bullion prices, ensuring these coins’ lasting value.

Your 2002 American Silver Eagle is a reeded coin, weighing 31.103 g (1 oz. of .999 fine silver). Its diameter is 2.98 mm.

The design of the MS69 graded 2002 Silver Eagle

Though the first coins of the American Silver Eagle Program weren’t struck until 1986, the design of the coins’ obverse was created eight decades earlier. The inspiration of Adolph A. Weinman, the iconic “Walking Liberty” graced the Walking Liberty Half Dollar for over thirty years, from 1916 to 1947. Reinstated for the American Silver Eagle, the design features Lady Liberty walking confidently toward the sun. One arm is outstretched, and the other holds olive branches, while around her are engraved the inscriptions, “2002,” “LIBERTY,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

The reverse of the coin is equally memorable. It features then U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti’s design of an American Bald Eagle, rising behind a heraldic shield with its talons clutching an olive branch and arrows. Above the eagle are thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, and circling the coin are the listings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER—ONE DOLLAR” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
