This 2002 American Platinum Eagle $50 was graded the top Mint State 70 grade by the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The 1/2 oz. bullion issue this year had a limited mintage of 24,005.

The United States official bullion coin is the American Platinum Eagle. The series was introduced in 1997 and has been popular with stackers and collectors ever since. The coins are struck on .9995 pure platinum blanks. This issue contains 1/2 oz. of platinum and bears a face value of $50. This is a sovereign coin with weight and purity guaranteed by the Mint. This example was struck at the Philadelphia branch of the US Mint.

The classic obverse of the coin was designed by Numismatic Renaissance Man, John M. Mercanti. Mr. Mercanti is the former Chief Engraver of the US Mint and has remained active in the field since his retirement. The image is that of the face of the Statue of Liberty, stoically facing forward. The reverse of the coin was designed for the bullion version of the coin, by Thomas D. Rogers. The image is that of a flying eagle in the backlit by the rays of the sun.
