The American eagle Coin Program
The first American Silver Eagle was released in 1986 when the United States Mint began the American Eagle Coin program. Ever since that date coin collectors have watched as these coins became a mainstay in the coin collecting world, being one of the most collected silver coins around!
This 2001 American Silver Eagle’s Design
This 2001-W American Silver Eagle bears on it what is said to be one of the most famed designs to ever exist in American coinage! This design is found on the obverse of the coin and was created by the unmistakable American sculptor, Adolph A. Weinman. It depicts Lady Liberty who is cloaked in an American flag, walking gracefully as the sun rises over a ridge and its rays begin to fill the sky. On the reverse of this coin you will find a design thought up by John Mercanti. This design features thirteen small stars in the shape of a triangle that is faced downward. Each small star represents one of the original colonies, and at the tip of the triangle shape that they form you will find an image of a heraldic eagle. On the reverse of the coin you will also see an inscription of a small, “W”, which signifies that this coin was minted at the West Point Mint.
This coin is a proof coin minted using a process that is much more complex than that of a business strike coin. This process entails manually feeding burnished coin blanks into presses that are fitted with special dies, and the striking of each coin multiple times to create the “cameo” appearance you see on this coin. “Cameo” is a term that refers to the contrasting finishes between the lightly frosted raised part of the designs on the coin, and the mirror like finishes on the background of the coin.
Why add this 2001 proof 69 deep cameo American silver eagle to your coin collection?
This 2001 proof coin bears a design, recognizable in the world of coin collectors, as one of the most beautiful design to ever be struck onto an American coin. It has also been graded by the reliable Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as a grade 69, which means it has nearly no post production imperfections. Slabbed in a protective plastic case to protect its quality, this 2001 Proof Silver American Eagle coin is not going to last!
