Why Own This Beautiful 2001 Swiss Shooting Thaler Silver Proof Coin?

The famous Swiss Shooting Thaler, legendary among shooting enthusiasts the world over, was initially minted in 1842 in honor of the popular shooting festivals held throughout the Swiss countryside. This .900 fine silver, 25-gram coin was graded Proof 69 Ultra Cameo by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) for its nearly flawless mirrored and frosted finish.

The Tradition Continues

The Swiss Shooting Thaler spans two eras: the classic era from 1842 until the onset of World War II in 1939 and the modern era from 1984 to present day. The beloved coin series was revived for the 1984 Zurich "Field Shoot" in Oberhasli. Each year of the modern era brings forth a new design in honor of a different Swiss shooting festival, with locations chosen on a rotating basis.

The 2001 Swiss Shooting Thaler commemorates central Switzerland's Uri Festival, home to Swiss folk hero William Tell. The obverse of the coin features a train emerging from a great stone tunnel with the picturesque Swiss Alps in the background. The "50" inscription, denoting the 50-Franc denomination, overlays the railroad tracks. The reverse of the coin depicts a laureate bust encircled by nineteen tiny stars and the inscription "23. URNER KANTONALSCHUTZENFEST" along with the minting year of 2001.

A Rare Mintage Year

This exquisite silver proof coin, graded Proof 69 from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), is one of only 1,500 coins minted in 2001. It also received the Ultra Cameo designation for its deeply mirrored finish and frosted devices, both adding to the beauty of the coin. A favorite with collectors worldwide, Swiss Shooting Thalers consistently sell out at the Swiss Mint each year. ModernCoinMart has obtained a small number of these hard-to-find coins exclusively for MCM collectors.
