Design of the 2001-P Proof Silver Capitol Visitor Center Commemorative

The obverse of the 2001-P Proof Silver Capitol Visitor Center Commemorative was designed by Marika Somogyi. It consists of two buildings, one the original Capitol Building, which is positioned to the lower left, and in the upper right, partially obscured by the original building, is the modern one. To the right of the original is the year “1800,” while “2001” is inscribed above the old capitol and to the right of the dome of the new one. Just under the old building is America’s national motto, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” “LIBERTY” is inscribed in the upper left, and “U.S. CAPITOL” is at the bottom.

The reverse, which was designed by John Mercanti, features a heraldic eagle with its wings spread widely. Several rays are positioned to the outside of the bird. Obstructing its body is a shield with stars and stripes, as well as a ribbon with the inscription “U.S. CAPITOL VISITOR CENTER.” Above the eagle is the motto from the Great Seal of the United States, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” There are two additional inscriptions on the rim, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
