Why by this 2001 $50 American 1/2 oz. Platinum Eagle?

This 1/2 oz. 2001 $50 American Platinum Eagle was part of the fifth issue of the world's favorite Platinum series. The coin was struck from .9995 fine platinum at the Philadelphia Mint. It is part of the lowest mintage of the four 2001 sizes issued at just 12,815 pieces.

Patriotic Statue of Liberty Design by John Mercanti

John Mercanti designed the obverse of the Platinum Eagle. The image features a close up look at the face of the Statue of Liberty, who looks directly at the holder. Included in the design is the radiate crown of the Statue, with seven rays that represent the seven continents and seven seas through which freedom is meant to spread.

Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s design features an eagle soaring high in the sky. The sun and its rays are in the lower left. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed at the top, and the weight and purity of the coin are inscribed to the right, together reading, ".9995 PLATINUM 1/2 OZ." The coin's face value, "$50," is included at the bottom.

Impeccable MS70

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's (NGC's) experts didn't find a single imperfection on this coin even when examining it under 5x magnification. That is why they awarded it their highest grade, Mint State 70 (MS70).
