Why order this 2000-W $10 Commemorative Proof Bi-Metallic Library of Congress?
In 2000, the US Mint issued a coin to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Library of Congress. These unique coins are sure to stand out in any collection thanks to their combination of highly touted metals, gold and platinum. In fact, the coin is 48% gold, 48% platinum, and 4% alloy. Just 27,445 of these coins were struck, each one bearing the West Point Mint's "W" mint mark.
Stunning Minerva Design by John Mercanti
The obverse design was created by John Mercanti. At the center is the hand of Minerva, which raises the torch of learning. The flames of the torch are gold, while the hand and torch are platinum. IN the background is the dome of the Library of Congress's Jefferson building. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed to the left of the torch. Inscriptions on the gold frame read, "LIBERTY," "2000," and "LIBRARY OF CONGRESS."
Thomas D. Rodgers's reverse design features the seal of the Library of Congress. The seal is in the platinum area. The seal consists of an eagle spreading its wings while guarding a union shield. In the bird's talons are arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend its values, and an olive branch, which expresses a desire for peace. A laurel wreath combines with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" to encircle the seal. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" arches over the image on the rim frame, while the coin's face value, "TEN DOLLARS," is inscribed below the design.
