2000-W Gold Eagle proof coin

The year 2000 had seen gold prices trade in a narrow range between $282 and $272, and the average price for the year was about $279.

Sales of American Gold Eagle bullion coins declined sharply from their 1999 levels, especially for the $5, 1/10th ounce piece, whose sales were down by almost 75%. However, the drop in bullion coin demand should be seen within the context of the so-called Y2K problem in the year 1999, which had many people concerned about how computers would handle the start of a new millennium. Those concerns result in sharply higher than usual demand for gold and other precious metals in 1999, and as a result sales of each denomination of these coins was much higher than usual.

On the other hand, sales of the proof versions of the American Gold Eagle trended upward in 2000, possibly because buyers wanted a proof coin to commemorate the start of the new millennium.

The $50, one-ounce proof coin in 2000, which was struck as usual at the West Point Mint, sold 33,007 units at an issue price from the U.S. Mint of $570.

Why purchase this PF70 UC 2000-W $50 Gold Eagle proof coin?

NGC has graded 1,614 of these coins. Of those 38% or 612 coins received the coveted, top-grade of proof 70, while 62% or 994 coins received the grade of proof 69.

As was the case with other proof Gold Eagles from this period, a smaller percentage of the total coins graded received proof 70 grades compared to the data from more recent years.

And that means a coin like this is a scarce modern issue that comes up for sale with much less frequency than proof 70 examples of these coins from recent years.

This beautiful proof gold coin would make a great addition to any collection or top-graded NGC registry set of American Gold Eagle proof coins.
