The obverse of the American Gold Eagle was originally created in 1907 for the Augustus Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. The design is now featured on every Gold Eagle and features Lady Liberty standing in front of the capitol building holding a torch and olive branch.

The reverse was designed by Miley Busiek and was specifically created for the American Gold Eagle with the design featuring a male eagle carrying an olive branch to his mate and young.
