The Sacagawea Dollar was introduced by the U.S. Mint in 2000 as a circulating coin honoring the young Shoshone woman who served as a guide to Lewis and Clark on their 1804-1806 westward expedition. This first year of issue 2000-D Sacagawea Dollar coin struck at the Denver Mint was originally part of the Mint's Millennium Coinage and Currency Set. The Millennium Set mintage was limited to 75,000.

Design of the Sacagawea Dollar

The obverse design by Glenna Goodacre portrays Sacagawea carrying her newborn son on her back, accompanied by the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "2000" and the Mint mark "D."

An eagle is depicted on the reverse with its wings spread in soaring flight to symbolized peace and freedom. The eagle is encircled by seventeen stars, representing the number of states at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The design by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. includes the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."

Proof-like Mint State 67

This 2000-D Sacagawea Dollar coin from the U.S. Mint's Millennium Coinage and Currency Set received the impressive grade of Mint State 67 from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The coin earned the additional designation of Proof-like (PL), for the reflective quality of its mirrored fields. The coin is presented in a sonically sealed protective holder with a NGC certification label.
