Exquisite Saint-Gaudens Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
Obverse: Augustus Saint-Gaudens' famous double eagle design graces the obverse. Liberty stands confidently at the center with her torch in one and an olive branch in the other. The rays of the morning sun spread out behind her, making her appear larger than life. Inscriptions on this face include the central figure's name, "LIBERTY," and the date, "2020." Augustus Saint-Gaudens was a prolific sculptor who immigrated to the United States from Ireland. He was the founder of the Cornish Colony, a community of artists.
Reverse: On the reverse is an eagle family design by Miley Busiek. A male eagle carries an olive branch back to its nest, where its mate tends to their nestlings. The mottoes "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are inscribed to the left and right. Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," the coin's metal content, "1 OZ. FINE GOLD," and its face value, "50 DOLLARS." Miley Busiek (now Miley Frost) sculpted the Seal of the President that is on display in the George W. Bush Presidential Center. She also designed the Peace through Strength monument on Army Navy Drive in Arlington, Virginia.
