Why buy this 2-Piece Proof 2019-P US Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollar Set?
In 2019, the US Mint marks the 50th anniversary of the famous Apollo 11 mission, the first ever to land men on the moon. The coins are just the second ever domed issues from the US Mint. This set includes two Commemorative Silver Dollar Proofs. Each piece was struck from 26.73 g of .999 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, which is represented by its "P" mint mark. These coins are part of a mintage of 400,000 pieces, which also includes bullion pieces.
Powerful Lunar Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
The coin's obverse features Gary Cooper's artwork, which won a competition for the spot. Sculpted by Joseph Menna, it features a single footprint on the surface of the moon. Arching over the image are depictions of the moon in several phases, which are interspersed among the names of the NASA programs that led up to the Apollo 11 mission, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO."
Phebe Hemphill designed the reverse. This convex face of the coin captures the curvature of Buzz Aldrin's space helmet, which dominates this face. The reflection on the helmet shows Neil Armstrong standing on the moon between the American flag and the lunar module. The coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," also appears on the visor.
Impeccable PF70 UC with Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Bobko & Haley Signed Labels
Both coins in this set earned Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's (NGC's) highest grade, Proof 70, which is given only to coins that are flawless as seen under 5x magnification. They were also certified Ultra Cameo due to the sharp contrasts between heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields that they exhibit. the labels on which these grades were provided celebrate the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. Karol "Bo" Bobko, who served on the maiden voyages of Challenger and the Atlantis, signed one of the labels, and Steve Hawley, who served on the Space Shuttle Discovery's maiden voyage, signed the other. The astronauts were not paid for their signatures by NGC; instead, the grading company made a donation to the Astronaut Scholarship Fund.
