Why purchase this 2-Piece 2019-P Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative 5 oz. Silver Dollar Proof with 1 oz. Apollo 11 Silver Dollar Set?
Collectors with an interest in the moon landing, as well as those who are simply patriotic, should not miss out on this two coin set. The two coins are among seven that the US Mint issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, which landed man on the moon for the first time. Together, the Apollo 11 commemoratives are just the second ever domed coins issued by the United States. The larger of the two was struck from five ounces of .999 fine silver, while the smaller was struck from 1 oz of the same purity. The coins bear the "P" mint mark of the Philadelphia Mint. When you buy this 5 oz. Apollo Commemorative, you will get the 1 oz. Silver Dollar for free!
Moving Lunar Footprint Design by Gary Cooper
Both coins in this set bear the same designs. The US Mint held a contest for the obverse design, and a submission by Gary Cooper emerged victorious. Cooper honors the three NASA programs that led up to the moon landing by including their names, "MERCURY," "GEMINI," and "APOLLO," among depictions of the moon in various phases at the top. At the center is a single footprint made by one of the astronauts who walked on the moon. "LIBERTY," "2019," and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," are all inscribed on this face.
The reverse, which is convex, was designed by Phebe Hempmhill. Inspired by a famous photograph taken while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were on the moon, it features Armstrong standing on the moon along with the American flag and the lunar module. Uniquely, this view is shown in the visor of Aldrin's helmet, the curvature of which the shape of the coin reflects. The face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR," is inscribed within the visor, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are included on other parts of the helmet.
Flawless PF70 FDI with Moon Core Holders
Both of the coins in this set come in holders that look like the surface of the moon. They were also both given First Day of Issue certification, which is reserved for coins that were submitted through an exclusive process, as well as Proof 70 grades. To receive that grade, a coin must be perfect as seen under 5x magnification.

The successful Apollo 11 Mission and the landing of the first men on the Moon was a distinctly American triumph. Although the bulk of the credit rightfully goes to the nation behind the mission, other countries also made extremely valuable – and often overlooked – contributions to it.
