Why buy this 2019-P American Legion 100th Anniversary Commemorative Silver Dollar and Medal 2-Piece Set?

The American Legion was founded in France in the wake of World War I. The organization was founded on the pillars of Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children and Youth. Now, the U.S Mint is marking its 100th anniversary with this two-piece set. The set consists of a commemorative silver dollar, which was also released separately, and a silver medal, which is only being released as part of the set. Both pieces were struck on 26.73 g planchets of .999 fine silver. Just 10,000 sets were struck.

Stunning American Legion Emblem Design by Paul C. Balan

The obverse of the silver dollar was designed by Paul C. Balan and sculpted by Renata Gordon. It features the American Legion emblem along with oak leaves and a lily. The reverse of the dollar features a fleur de lis, which represents the foundation of the organization in France, and the inscription “100 YEARS OF SERVICE.” They are joined by the crossed flags of the United States and the American Legion. This face was designed by Patricia Lucas-Morris and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso.

Benjamin Sowards designed and Joseph Menna sculpted the obverse of the silver medal. It features an eagle spreading its wings as it prepares to take flight along with five stars, one for each branch of the military. The eagle represents courage, determination, and initiative. The rim frame bears the inscription “HONORING AMERICA’S VETERANS.” Richard Masters’s reverse design, which was sculpted by Renata Gordon, is quite moving. A field of stars represents America’s past, present, and future veterans. One star is missing. It is replaced by a single incuse star at the bottom, which represents those who died in military service. “SERVICE AND SACRIFICE” is inscribed above the incuse star.

Virtually Flawless PF69 UC ER with Liberty Flag Label

Part of an American flag features on the label on which Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided its grading information for these pieces. NGC graded both pieces Proof 69, which means that they appear perfect to the naked eye. Both pieces were also certified Ultra Cameo and Early Releases. UC pieces exhibit sharp contrasts between heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields, while ER were submitted to NGC within 30 days of their initial release from the mint.
