Why buy this 2-Piece 2019 1-oz Silver Saint-Gaudens Last Cent National Parks Medal Set?
Fans of Augustus Saint-Gaudens are sure to love this two piece set. The set makes available the last coin design that the famed artist submitted to the U.S Mint, one that was never struck. At the direction of President Theodore Roosevelt, the $10 and $20 designs of Saint-Gaudens were struck on US coinage, but the Lincoln Cent took the place of his penny design. With the authorization of the National Parks Foundation, Commonwealth Mint released this 1 oz silver piece that bears Saint-Gaudens's designs. Struck from .999 fine silver, this piece is part of a mintage of 2,500 and comes with a cupro-nickel medallion struck with the same designs as the medal at the same diameter of a US cent.
Stunning Liberty Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens
The obverse features a left-side portrait of Liberty. Saint-Gaudens modeled her after the goddess victory, which is why he placed a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory, on her head. Thirteen stars, one for each of the original states, arch over her head, and the word "LIBERTY" is inscribed at the bottom.
A laurel wreath encircles a pair of inscriptions on the reverse. "ONE CENT" is inscribed in large letters at the center, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is split above and below it.
Virtually Flawless PF69 UC with Storybook and Mercanti Signed Labels
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded the silver medal Proof 69, which means that it appears flawless to the naked eye. NGC also certified the piece Ultra Cameo, thus indicating that both faces exhibit particularly sharp contrasts between heavily frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields. This information comes on a label that was hand signed by former U.S Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti. The medal comes with a storybook that tells the tale of its fascinating history.
