Description
Why purchase this Silver 2-oz Sons of Liberty Round?
Organized as a protest to the Stamp Act, the Sons of Liberty was a secret organization that played a central role in the American Revolution. Believed to have been started by Samuel Adams, the organization dissolved in 1776 as more formal opposition to British rule came together. Struck from 2 oz of .999 fine silver, this round pays tribute to the militia, which played a central role in the fight for America’s independence.
Powerful Revolutionary Design
On the obverse, a rebel kneels holding his rifle. He also has a pistol strapped to his chest. Behind him, an American flag with thirteen stars blows in the wind. Arching over him is the name of the militia to which he belonged, “SONS OF LIBERTY.”
The reverse features the Tree of Liberty. Located in Hanover Square, the tree was the meeting point for the Boston chapter of the Sons of Liberty. A snake wraps around its trunk, a warning to anyone who would infringe on liberty. A sunburst and stars spread out behind the tree. Muskets flanked the tree. They are wrapped in a ribbon that bears the words “DEFENDING THE TREE OF LIBERTY.” Inscriptions on the rim to the left and right of the design note the round’s weight, “TWO TROY OUNCES,” and purity, “.999 FINE SILVER.”
