Spectacular Type-2 Silver Eagle Design
Obverse: An image of Lady Liberty strolling towards the sunrise is centered on the obverse. The young woman carries a bouquet of oak and laurel branches, while an American flag billows around her walking form. This timeless personification of Liberty was originally created for the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin by Adolph A. Weinman, an acclaimed medallic and architectural sculptor of the early 20th century. Although this imagery has appeared on the Silver Eagle since its 1986 introduction, the Type-2 style includes the artist's "AW" monogram beneath the motto for the first time in the history of the series.
Reverse: The reverse features an eagle preparing to land in an unseen nest, with an oak branch in its grip. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "ONE DOLLAR," along with the "W" Mint mark. The Type-2 Eagle Landing graphic is credited to U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist Emily Damstra, who is known for award-winning nature themed illustrations. Ms. Damstra's stunning rendition of the national bird was brought to fruition by sculptor Michael Gaudioso, who has designed/sculpted more than forty coin and medal images since joining the Mint's legion of sculptor/engravers in 2009.
