Why purchase this Mint State 69 1999-W Mint Error Gold Eagle?
Responding to the demand for precious metals with the unknown of Y2K looming in the future, 1999 was a busy year for the U.S. Mint. Increased production of Gold Eagles at West Point resulted in a quality control error late in the year: unpolished proof dies were used to strike bullion issues including the "W" Mint mark. The error was not discovered until 2000, at which time many of the coins had already been sold to Asian jewelry fabricators, so mintage of this coin is undetermined. The U.S. Mint confirms that Gold Eagle dies are retired after striking approximately 6,000 coins, implying a maximum mintage number if the error occurred with only one set of dies. However, the amount of these rare coins that have surfaced for grading has proved to be considerably lower. This scarce 1999-W Mint Error $10 Gold Eagle is truly a key date acquisition for any serious Gold Eagle collector.
Iconic Gold Eagle design
The Saint-Gaudens 1907 Double Eagle design adorns the obverse of the Gold Eagle coin, inscribed "LIBERTY," "1999," and "W." The reverse, designed by Miley Busiek, portrays a bald eagle in flight returning to his nest, mate and young.
Mint State 69 "With W" label
This nearly flawless 1999-W $10 American Gold Eagle was graded Mint State 69 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). It was also authenticated to be one of the 1999 Mint Error bullion issue coins, struck with an unpolished proof die, confirmed by the notation "With W" on the label.
Don't delay, this is an extremely rare opportunity to add this elusive, key date 1999-W Mint Error $10 Gold American Eagle to your collection!
