Your chance to own a rare 1999 Silver Proof Swiss Shooting Thaler!
The classic Swiss Shooting Thaler was introduced to commemorate the popular shooting festivals held throughout Switzerland. This gorgeous 50-franc silver coin was struck to gem proof quality in 25 g of .900 fine silver and is protected in an original Mint capsule.
Stately Swiss design
First minted in 1842, the Swiss Shooting Thaler was issued for nearly a century until 1939 when the onset of World War II halted its production. The coin was reintroduced in 1984, beginning the modern era of minting. Each year brings a new design celebrating a different Swiss shooting festival.
This 1999 silver proof coin commemorates the Wallis Festival in Sion. The obverse of the coin features Helvetia, the female personification of Switzerland, grasping a shield bearing the Swiss national cross. The depiction of Helvetia is set inside a mirrored oval while the rest of the obverse has a frosted finish. The inscriptions "CONVERTIBLE EN 50 FRS" and "A LA FETE DE TIR" surround Helvetia encircled by a ring of beads. The reverse of the coin features a wreath surrounding a shield with thirteen stars. Two rifles cross diagonally at the base of the wreath. The inscriptions "17e TIR CANTONAL VALAISAN," "17. WALLISER KANTONALSCHUTZENFEST" and "SION 1999" and an outer circle of beads form a ring around the design.
GEM Proof Quality in a Low 1,500 Mintage
With a low mintage issue of only 1,500 coins, this 1999 silver proof is a rare find. The gem proof quality and combination of mirrored and frosted finishes on the obverse, unusual for the Swiss Shooting Thaler, makes this an unbeatable addition to any collection. Your coin is enclosed in an original Mint capsule for lifetime protection.
