Why purchase this 1/2 oz. 1999 American Gold Eagle bullion coin?

The American Eagle Bullion Program was launched by the U.S. Mint in 1986 with the release of the Gold Eagle and Silver Eagle series. While the Silver Eagle is minted only as a one ounce coin, the Gold Eagle is struck in four different sizes.

  • This 1999 Gold Eagle bullion coin contains 1/2 Troy oz. of .9167 fine gold.
  • The 27 mm diameter coin was struck at the West Point Mint.
  • Final mintage is reported to be 263,013 coins.

Patriotic Beauty of the American Gold Eagle

Obverse: Lady Liberty is portrayed on the obverse marching forward, holding aloft an olive branch of peace and a torch of enlightenment, with the sun's rays aglow in the background. She is surrounded by a star to represent each state, along with the inscriptions "LIBERTY" and "1999." The design is adapted from the 1907 Double Eagle coin designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, an award-winning sculptor of the early 20th century.

Reverse: The reverse illustrates a family of eagles; the female and young in a nest, with the male in flight above grasping an olive branch. The design is credited to Miley Busiek, an American artist whose works include sculptures on display in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and the Smithsonian American History Museum.
