The U.S. Mint first introduced the American Gold Eagle in 1986, the gold coin immediately made an impact, becoming the most widely bought gold bullion coin in the world, valued by both stackers and collectors for its metal content and patriotic designs. This Gold American Eagle was struck in 1998 with a face value of $25 U.S. dollars and a metal content of 1/2 Troy oz. of .9167 pure gold.

The U.S. Mint choose to feature the remastered work of Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the obverse of the American Gold Eagle. The design depicts a bold full-length figure of Liberty walking forwards backed by rays of sunlight.

Created by Miley Busiek, the reverse features a male eagle carrying an olive branch to his nest, where his mate and young wait. The reverse includes the traditional American mottos and the coins specifications.
