The Silver American eagleThe Silver Eagle program began in the year 1986, it was a huge hit then and its popularity continues to grow being noted as the most collected Silver Coin in American Coinage. Below these stars is the depiction of a heraldic eagle behind a shield, a design created by John Mercanti. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include; “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “1 OZ. FINE SILVER”, “ONE DOLLAR”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, and the letter “P”, which signifies that this coin was minted by the Philadelphia Mint. Beyond the classic design on this coin, it also has a proof finish which allows the images and inscriptions on it to stand out because they are lightly frosted and are contrasted with extremely shiny, almost mirror like fields! The US Mint used a specialized process to mint this coin; a process that entails manually feeding burnished coin blanks into the presses, which are fitted with special dies.
