Why add this 1996-W American Gold Eagle proof coin to your collection?
The U.S. Mint introduced the American Gold Eagle series in 1986. Obverse imagery for the series is borrowed from the 1907 Gold Double Eagle, the design of which was the result of a collaboration between sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and President Theodore Roosevelt. A product of the West Point Mint, this proof 1996-W Gold Eagle coin contains 1/10 Troy oz. of .9167 fine gold. Final mintage is reported to be 57,047.
Gorgeous Representation of Lady Liberty
Lady Liberty is portrayed on the obverse confidently striding forward, carrying an olive branch and torch of enlightenment, with the rays of the rising sun in the background. The image is surrounded by a fifty star border and accompanied by the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "1996" and the "W" Mint mark.
Designed by Miley Busiek, the reverse features an incredibly detailed eagle family portrait, depicting a nesting female and eaglets, with the male in flight overhead grasping an olive branch in its talons.
