Featuring the Iconic Walking Liberty Design of Adolph Weinman
Obverse: Adolph Weinman created the obverse design, which is known as Walking Liberty, for the half dollar. Liberty strides to the left wearing a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave. In her left arm she bears laurel branches, symbols of civilian honors, and oak branches, symbols of military honors. The sun rises in the background. Obverse inscriptions read, "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "1996." Adolph Weinman is among the most famous numismatic designers in American history. Besides the half dollar, his work includes the famous Mercury dime and several medals for members of the military.
Reverse: The reverse design was modeled off of the Great Seal of the United States. An eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, symbols of military readiness and peace, under thirteen stars, which represent the original states. The design is encircled by three rim inscriptions. They read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR." John Mercanti served as the eleventh Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He has created more designs for coins and medals than any other US Mint employee in history.
