Why purchase this 1996-P NGC PF69 UC Olympics High Jump silver dollar?
To honor the Olympic sport of high jump the U.S. Mint issued a silver dollar in proof and uncirculated conditions. The coin’s obverse shows a high jump athlete doing the “Fosbury Flip,” while the reverse depicts the logo of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games with the traditional Olympic torch and flame. As with other coins in the 16-piece program for these games (32 counting both versions of each coin – proof and uncirculated), these coins failed to come close to selling out of their maximum mintage of 1 million coins. The proof coin sold 124,502, which would be a solid number for a more recent issue, but was disappointing to the U.S. Mint at the time. Proceeds for these coins were used to train athletes.
NGC has graded 1,313 of these coins with 90% being Proof 69. Proof 70 coins are very scarce and cost thousands. This Proof 69 example is a much more economical way to add this piece to your commemorative coin collection.
