The Games of the XXVI Olympiad were held in the summer of 1996 in the American city of Atlanta, Georgia. This event also marked the centennial anniversary of the first modern international Olympics competition, which took place in Athens, Greece in 1896. The U.S. Mint honored the milestone event by issuing sixteen different coins in 1995-1996 dedicated to the Atlanta Olympics. Each coin in the series celebrates a specific sporting event or icon associated with the Olympic Games.
