Why buy this 1996 Silver American Eagle?

1996 marked the tenth anniversary of the Silver Eagle series. It was also the lowest mintage in the entire history of the series, with just over 3.6 million pieces struck. Those two factors combine to make this coin the most coveted in the entire series. It was struck on a one-ounce planchet of .999 fine silver.

Classic Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman

The coin's obverse design was adapted from Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty half dollar, which was minted from 1916-1947. Liberty strides to the left side of the coin, extending her right hand above the rising sun, as though greeting the new day. She is draped in an American flag and wears a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom, on her head. She carries with her branches of laurel and oak. They symbolize honors bestowed upon civilians and members of the military, respectively.

John Mercanti's adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States is on the reverse. He created the design specifically for this series. At the center is a union shield, which is guarded by an eagle. The eagle spreads its wings as it holds a ribbon in its beak. On the ribbon is the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one). The eagle also clutches an olive branch and arrows in its claws, the former indicating a preference for peace and the latter service as a reminder to all that America will defend her values. At the top of the design, thirteen stars, symbols of the original states, are arranged in a triangular formation.

Beautifully Preserved GEM BU

Like many coins in this mintage, it has some spotting, but it remains in GEM Brilliant Uncirculated condition. That means that it was struck sharply and maintains above average eye appeal.
