1995-W West Point Proof Silver Eagle
NGC PF70 UC
Like most great coinage an interesting convergence of circumstances that are unlikely to be repeated created this issue. It was struck to note the beginning of Silver Eagle production at the West Point Mint and it was issued in the 10th Anniversary proof set along with 4 Gold Eagles late in the year. Most eagle collectors had already purchased what they needed for their sets and only a few with foresight made the financial commitment necessary to buy the expensive sets. In short the 95-W came to market too late, was too expensive and it was not obvious to everyone at the time that modern eagles would be collected by date and mint mark. This unique convergence of events created the lone lone super coin that is twelve times rarer than the next strongest cameo proof.
This coins dominance of the Proof Silver Eagle series is absolute in any grade and in PR-70 it is almost impossible to find. The 1995-W PR-70 is the coin that most collectors of this series will not get past.
