The Centennial Olympic Games were held in 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia. The U.S. Mint honored the event with the issue of sixteen different coin designs over the course of two years, from 1995-1996. Struck at the West Point Mint from 0.242 Troy oz. of .900 fine gold, this one of two gold Olympic releases for 1995 is dedicated to the Atlanta Olympic Stadium. Mintage of the 21.6 mm diameter proof is reported to be 43,124.
Breathtaking Commemorative Designs
The obverse depicts a view of the Olympic Stadium, beside the logo of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, which features a flaming torch, stars and "100." The design by Marcel Jovine and William C. Cousins includes the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "THE CENTENNIAL GAMES," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "ATLANTA" and "1995."
Illustrated on the reverse, created by Frank Gasparro, is an incredibly detailed bald eagle with a banner in its beak bearing the centennial dates "1896-1996." Additional inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "W" and "FIVE DOLLARS."
