Design of the 1995-W 1/10 Oz Gold Eagle Proof 69 Ultra Cameo
The obverse of this 1995-W 1/10 oz. Gold Eagle features the iconic Standing Liberty design of August Saint-Gaudens. Liberty stands confidently and regally with her left foot upon a stone. In her left hand, which is extended to her side, she holds a symbol of peace, the olive branch. In her right hand, she holds a torch, a symbol of enlightenment, out in front of her. Her hair blows freely in the wind, as does her garb. In the lower left of the coin, there is a small rendering of the United States Capitol Building. In the background, there are rays emanating roughly from the direction of Liberty’s feet. “LIBERTY,” is inscribed above the design. Fifty stars, four more than appeared when Saint Gaudens first created the design, surround the rest of the image, representing the fifty states. There is also a “W,” a mint mark that indicates that the coin was struck at West Point, home of the United States Military Academy.
The words, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the country whose coin this is, arch across the top of the reverse. At the bottom, information about the coin’s gold weight and its face value are inscribed: “1/10 OZ. FINE GOLD ~ 5 DOLLARS.” The image features a family of eagles, known around the world as a symbol of the United States. The mother guards her children in the nest as the father returns, wings spread, with an olive branch in its talons. Two inscriptions appear between the father and the nest, one on either side. On the right is the motto of the United States, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” while the motto from the Great Seal of the United States, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” appears on the left. The initials of the coin’s original engraver, “JW,” are in small font under the mother and her chicks, while under the other side of the nest are the initials, “MS,” which stand for Miley Busiek, the reverse’s designer.
The label in this coin’s slab is simple. The NGC (Numismatic Guarantee Corporation) logo appears in a bar on the bottom. For easy authentication of the coin and its grade, a certification number and bar code are included just above that. At the top of the label, “1995 W EAGLE G$5,” provides information about the mintage year, mint, type of metal, and face value, while the next line, which reads, “PF 69 ULTRA CAMEO,” provides the grade and finish. On the reverse, the label features a holographic image with the NGC logo.
