The U.S. Mint issued this commemorative silver dollar in 1994 to raise awareness and funds to benefit the Prisoner of War Memorial Museum that was to be built in Andersonville, Georgia. Struck at the West Point Mint from 0.7736 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver with a diameter of 38.1 mm, final mintage of the 1994-W Prisoner of War Museum Silver Dollar is reported to be 54,893.

Magnificent Patriotic Imagery

A gorgeous bald eagle in flight is illustrated on the obverse, surrounded by length of barbed wire. A broken chain trails from one of its legs, symbolic of freedom from imprisonment. Designed by Tom Nielson, the image include the inscriptions "LIBERTY,""FREEDOM," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "1994."

The reverse features the artistry of Edgar Z. Steever, depicting an exterior view of the memorial museum. The inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" curve above, with "NATIONAL PRISONER OF WAR MUSEUM" and the "W" Mint mark below.
