History & Design of the 1994 United States Prestige Proof Set
Commencing with the final game held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, the 15th FIFA World Cup Tournament was held in nine cities across the United States in 1994. A record 3.6 million spectators came out to support their favorite teams, with an average attendance of 69,000 people at each game. To commemorate this huge event, the U.S. Mint released a half dollar, silver dollar and gold $5 coin in 1994.
For the first time ever, the same design was used by the U.S. Mint on the reverse of all three commemorative coins. This design featured the 1994 World Cup logo bookmarked with two laurel branches. The logo itself features waving stripes with a soccer ball swooshing across them, arranged in a way to look like the U.S. Flag. Above that image is "WORLD CUP" and "USA94." The World Cup Commemorative Half Dollar, featuring a single player dribbling the soccer ball down the field, and the World Cup Commemorative Silver Dollar, featuring two players battling for the ball, are included in your 1994 Prestige Proof Set.
Inscriptions on the obverse of all 7 coins include "1994," "LIBERTY," and "IN GOD WE TRUST." Inscribed on the reverse of each coin is the denomination of the coin, along with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." In addition to the two commemorative coins included in the set, you also receive one each of a Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter and Kennedy Half Dollar.
The design featured on the reverse of each of these five additional coins is as follows:
Lincoln Memorial building on the Lincoln Cent
Monticello building on the Jefferson Nickel
An olive branch, a torch and an oak branch on the Roosevelt Dime
An eagle and olive branches on the Washington Quarter
A shield, eagle, olive branch and arrows on the Kennedy Half Dollar
